Dorm Bed or Private Room? The Real Math for Groups
The assumption is almost universal: hostels are for budget travelers, hotels are for everyone else. It's usually true for solo travelers and pairs, and it becomes less true the moment a group grows past two or three people, because of a simple pricing difference most people never actually run the numbers on.
Two different pricing models
A hostel bed is priced per person. Add a fourth traveler to your group and the hostel total goes up by exactly one more bed's cost, every night. A hotel room, on the other hand, is priced per room — the same room costs the same whether one person or four people are sleeping in it, up to its occupancy limit. That single difference is the whole story.
Working out the rooms you actually need
The step people skip is figuring out how many hotel rooms a group actually needs. You can't book two-thirds of a room, so round up: three travelers at a two-person occupancy need two rooms, not 1.5. That rounding is exactly where a lot of the assumed hostel advantage quietly disappears for a mid-sized group, because you're now paying for a spare bed's worth of room capacity you're not using.
A worked comparison, group by group
Take a five-night stay where dorm beds run $18 a night plus $2 a night each for a locker and towel ($20 per person per night), against a double hotel room at $65 a night with 8% tax. Here's how the total looks as the group size changes:

At these particular prices, the dorm stays cheaper all the way to four people, because $18-a-night beds are genuinely hard to beat and the double room's occupancy of two caps how much a hotel room's fixed cost can be spread out. The crossover shows up with a bigger room type. Switch to a $65-per-night room with double occupancy but compare it against a hostel charging closer to $22 a night, and pair that with a quad room (occupancy 4) at $80 a night with 8% tax, and the picture changes:

Notice the crossover only happens at exactly four travelers — the point where the group fills the quad room completely. At five, a second room has to open up for one extra person, and the hostel is cheaper again by a wide margin. This is the part most people miss: the deciding factor isn't really group size in the abstract, it's whether your group size exactly fills a room's occupancy. Don't forget the small stuff
Hostel extras add up more than they look on paper — a locker deposit, a towel rental, sometimes a linen fee, charged per person per night. Over a week, these small daily charges can meaningfully close the gap with a hotel room that includes towels and a safe for free. Include them in the comparison, not just the headline bed price, which is exactly what the $2-a-night extras did in the first table above.
It's not only about the money
Cost isn't the only factor, and plenty of backpackers happily pay a small premium for a dorm bed because of the social side of hostel life — meeting other travelers, communal kitchens, organized pub crawls, a common room that a private hotel room simply doesn't offer. Conversely, a group traveling together for work, or one that specifically wants uninterrupted sleep before an early start, may reasonably choose the private room even in a scenario where the table above says the dorm is cheaper. The math in this piece tells you which option costs less; it doesn't tell you which option is right for your group, and those aren't always the same answer.
Checking both room sizes before booking
Because the crossover point depends so heavily on room occupancy, it's worth checking more than one room type on a booking site before assuming you know the answer — a property that only shows double rooms by default often has triple or quad rooms available if you filter for them, and as the tables above show, the room size a group happens to land on can flip the entire comparison.
Common mistakes
The biggest one is comparing a single hostel bed price against a single hotel room price without multiplying either out by nights and travelers — that comparison is meaningless on its own. The second is forgetting to round the room count up; three people do not fit in 1.5 rooms, and pricing it as if they did understates the real hotel cost. The third is ignoring hostel extras, which can be 10–15% of the headline bed price over a multi-night stay.
When this doesn't apply
This math assumes both options are otherwise equivalent, which isn't always true. A hostel with a genuinely social common room and kitchen has value beyond the bed price for travelers who want that; a hotel with better security, a private bathroom, or a quieter environment has value beyond its price for travelers who need to work or sleep on a schedule. If either of those matters more to your group than the marginal dollar difference, the “cheaper” option in the table isn't automatically the right one.

Does trip length change which option wins?
No — both totals scale linearly with nights, so the ratio between them, and therefore the winner, stays the same whether you're comparing one night or ten. What actually changes the winner is group size relative to room occupancy, and the per-unit prices themselves.
What if the hotel offers a multi-night discount?

Is a triple room ever the better comparison than a double or a quad?

Should I include breakfast in the comparison?
Only if one option includes it and the other doesn't, and only at what you'd actually otherwise pay for it. A hotel's included breakfast is a real cost offset; a hostel's self-catering kitchen is a cost saving of a different kind, and neither should be assumed without checking.
What if the group wants to split across a dorm and a private room?
