Regional Daily-Budget Reference

Illustrative daily costs — accommodation, food, local transport, and a small misc allowance — across eight regions and three travel styles. Every day rate and 30-day total below is computed live from these same four numbers by the exact same logic as the Trip Budget Calculator, so the table can never drift out of step with what the calculator itself would tell you.

These are illustrative planning ranges, not live prices. They're broadly consistent with commonly reported shoestring-travel costs, but actual prices vary by country, city, season, and how you travel — and they change over time. Verify current hostel, food, and transport prices for your specific destination before finalizing a budget. Nothing here is financial advice; it's a starting point for your own numbers in the tools.

What the three travel styles mean

Dorm-Hopper (leanest)

The leanest realistic setup: shared dorm beds, mostly street food or self-catering, and local transport over anything faster.

Standard Shoestring

The most common shoestring mix: dorm beds most nights, a blend of street food and the occasional sit-down meal, and a mix of local and regional transport.

Comfortable Budget

Still budget travel, but with more breathing room: private rooms or nicer dorms some nights, more restaurant meals, and faster transport when it saves real time.

How to use this table

Find the region and style closest to your own trip, then plug those four numbers — accommodation, food, local transport, misc — into the Trip Budget Calculator along with your actual trip length, traveler count, buffer, and one-off costs (flights, visa, insurance, gear) for a complete total. Prefer a flat daily-allowance approach instead of itemizing? The same four numbers, summed, are a reasonable input to the Per-Diem Estimator too.

For worked, region-specific examples built from this same style of data, see our guides on comparing day rates across three regions, building a 30-day budget from scratch, and how season changes the numbers.
