The math behind the comparison
The hostel side of the comparison is simple multiplication: bed price plus any nightly extras, times travelers, times nights. The hotel side needs one extra step first — working out how many rooms the group actually needs, by dividing the traveler count by the room’s occupancy and rounding up, since you can’t book two-thirds of a room. Tax or a resort fee is then applied as a percentage on top of the room total, the way most hotels bill it.
Run the numbers for your actual group size before assuming a dorm is automatically the cheaper choice — it usually is for solo travelers and pairs, but the gap narrows, and sometimes flips, once three or four people are splitting one hotel room.

Why isn't a hostel always cheaper for a group?
A hostel bed is priced per person, so the hostel total scales linearly with group size. A hotel room is priced per room regardless of how many people share it (up to its occupancy limit), so for larger groups splitting one or two rooms, the per-person hotel cost can end up lower than paying for a dorm bed each.
How does the room-occupancy setting work?
Set it to how many travelers a single hotel room realistically sleeps — commonly 2, sometimes more with a rollaway or a family room. The calculator rounds up to the number of rooms your group actually needs and multiplies from there, so 3 travelers at an occupancy of 2 books 2 rooms, not 1.5.
What should I include as hostel extras?
Anything charged on top of the bed rate that a hotel room typically includes by default — a locker deposit, towel rental, or a linen fee are common ones. Leaving these out understates the true hostel cost, especially on longer stays where small daily fees add up.
Does this factor in dorm privacy or comfort?
No — it's a pure cost comparison. A shared dorm and a private room aren't equivalent experiences, and plenty of backpackers happily pay the hostel premium for the social side of a dorm even when the math favors a hotel room for a larger group.
