New Limited Time 45,000 Mile Delta Credit Card Offer

If you’re a fan of Delta (I’m not really), then you’ll be happy to know that, for a limited time, you can get 45,000 miles when you sign up for a Delta American Express.

Until December 19th, 2011, you can get 45,000 Delta SkyMiles after spending $3,000 within 3 months.

If you don’t have the $3,000 worth of spending, then the traditional offer of 30,000 miles after spending $500 would be better for you.

The Points Guy reported that there is also a 55,000 bonus mile offer for the Delta American Express Business card. The catch? It has a $10,000 minimum spend!

If this card has been on your list of cards to get, I would get in on the offer as the Delta card hasn’t had the outstanding offers like other cards.

If I could only afford to pay off one minimum spend of $3,000, I’d much rather earn 50,000 Ultimate Rewards points through Chase Sapphire Preferred. But, you’re not me, and I bet there are reasons why the Delta offer could be much better than the Chase Sapphire Preferred offer.

What’s the most important card benefit?

I find that often when I’m searching for flights, Delta has the most competitive fares (after Southwest). The problem is that Delta charges for bags. However, if you have the Delta American Express, you won’t pay for baggage. If you fly fairly often on Delta, or if you fly with a family, it won’t take long to see the value in this card.

Why Did I Say I’m Not a Fan of Delta?

When I did my Delta SkyMiles program overview, I mentioned that their miles are harder than most to redeem at the lowest levels.

Just this week, I was looking for flights from Denver to Rome.

I went as far out as I could (into November 2012), and I only saw three days where Delta had availability in business class for the lowest level. Wow! That’s not much availability, is it?

Delta’s biggest issue is their US domestic flights. If you live in a Delta hub, you’re much more likely to be able to get awards overseas. But good luck finding a low level award if you live anywhere else.

I’m not saying it can’t be done because I flew this summer for 25,000 on a last minute booking, but you should collect Delta miles with appropriate expectations.
